The Culture House & Plaza
In the former technique department of Nyholm, in the building known as ‘den savtakkede’, a new culture house will emerge. The middle section of the existing building will be removed allowing for an arcade space, which both will host an entrance to the building but at the same time also guide people coming from the new bicycle bridge in the southwest corner towards the workshop yard.
The arcade could potentially be an active space allowing for exhibitions, installations and music events. A close relationship with the art educations on the neighbooring island of Frederiksholm, could allow for the students to use some of the rooms in the culture house and the publis space surrounding it.
The building stock forming the front towards the western canal will house several restaurants and cafés. These will add life to the street in front of them, but their activities will also grow into the courtyard on the back side and possibly also extend to the culture plaza on the south face.
The culture plaza will be a big flexible space, allowing for different activities to happen. During the summer different types of markets and gatherings will happen, both in relation to the plaza, but possibly also extend to the bassin in front of it.
With its open environment towards the south, this spot will also have the full potential of the sun all day.
The plaza will cover a parking basement with a capacity of 300 cars, divided into three levels. The access will happen from the main road avoiding more car traffic into the site of Nyholm. This parking facility will mainly act as a service for the guests of the naval museum, but some of the spots will also be allocated for the housing on the new harbour front.
The access to the parking basement will happen on the left side of the plaza, with the intention of allowing people to flow either through the harbour park or the arcade when coming to the surface.
