This project is based in Tirana, the capital of ex-communist country, Albania. After 30 years of opening its borders, the country still struggles to find a balanced society. One of the outcomes of this imbalanced society is the departure of its youth to the outside world. This also leads to the delay of EU integration, which Albania has the candidature for, but not the key to the door, yet.
80% of its youth will flood outside once the door is opened. Statistics regarding the youth of Albania are on the negative spectrum, and the youth feel trapped inside the country: corruption, crime, injustice and unemployment – wherever they look towards.
The project is to provide spaces for these youngsters where they can be part of a more positive future. Where they can initiate their ideas, form legions for new start-up businesses, and make prototypes. An incubator for the future generations.
The aim is to respect the memory of the past, yet providing spaces for the present necessities and allowing positive growth for the future. Therefore, the choice of adapting, reusing and transforming a communism era relic for a more sustainable development of today and tomorrow was made.
The project looks closely on the positioning of the existing structure, which proposes potentials to affect not only the youth, but the whole discourse of the country’s future development in the field of architecture and urbanism.
