The aim of this thesis project is to create a library, which will inspire people: To meet and talk and spend time, equally essential in company or on ones own.
Space to Read stands up for an unagigated architecture, consisting of small spaces, subtle qualities and a mindful continuation of the vernacular. For an architecture of the ordinary, where you might find the most surprising. A new role model for libraries.
The project works to elaborate where the typology of Public Libraries might or should head to and formulate spatial qualities to the concept of reading outside people‘s private homes. This task is chosen to challenge the notion, libraries make to a majority of non-/ visitors; which is often based upon a character of an obsolete archive or safekeeping, a place to may pick up material, but with no intention to stay or even the possibility to keep pace with digital media. The linguistic analyse brings one back to Latin and Greek origins, which reveal the same, deep rootedness in Storing, which interests or is accessible to only an exclusive user group. Resulting in a grand, representative character like Boullée in 1785 imagined a library of the future to be.
Which is in vast contradiction to what people in their free time actually would like to do: Hang out with a cup of coffee !
